Pacific Pointe Apartments

San Francisco CA | Completed

2016

Pacific Pointe the first 100% affordable housing within San Francisco’s 638-acre Hunters View Shipyard master plan, the largest redevelopment in the city’s history.

The community offers 60 family homes—ranging from one- to three-bedroom—supported by dynamic outdoor spaces and an array of on-site amenities. Poised at the hilltop, the building maximizes the steep site’s sunny views out to the Shipyard and San Francisco Bay.

The design is organized as two L-shaped wings that embrace a bi-level courtyard. A shaded entry court offers seating and connects the main entry to the parking garage, mailboxes, management offices, and a curving stair up to the sunny podium-level courtyard. This central courtyard includes a range of seating and gathering spaces, interspersed with lush plantings. Building circulation passes through this courtyard at both the podium level and above, via a stack of open-air bridges that bisect the common space.

Apartments open directly onto this outdoor circulation, enjoying views into the courtyards and out toward the Bay. At the northwest and southwest edges, homes connect outward to the surrounding landscaped sidewalks via private residential stoops.

The community is distinguished by a five-story weathering-steel tower, which demarcates the common rooms on each floor and is topped with an outdoor view deck and picnic area at the very top. In the evening, when the lights of the common rooms are on, this perforated form is backlit by the community space to create a glowing, lantern-like effect.

Extensive community engagement resulted in the integration of a story-telling fence at the main residential entry that highlights the figures and concepts important to the culture of the community and adds color and texture to the public street.
