Africatown Plaza

Seattle WA | Under Construction

Africatown Plaza is an affordable housing development and gathering space in Seattle’s once primarily African-American Central District.

This seven-story mixed-use building includes 126 affordable homes, offices for the Africatown Community Land Trust, and neighborhood-focused retail and amenities. The building is intended to serve as a unique destination within Seattle and a reflection of the Black Experience within the Pacific Northwest.

The community-driven design includes a range of social spaces, including a plaza “heart” for large celebrations, and a stoop culture enabled by ground-floor terraces that activate the street edge and connect outward toward the neighborhood.

Curving and organic forms inspired by African architecture—strong favorites from the design workshops—are incorporated in areas of high visibility and shared enjoyment, such as the waving bay facing 23rd Avenue.  An iconic weathering steel volume visually anchors this corner and hovers above the plaza in the manner of a tree canopy, offering shelter and a gathering space for residents, while the columns root it into the ground, symbolizing stability and permanence for the community.
