Solar Street Furniture

Birmingham AL | Installation

2022

This solar-powered public installation, designed for The 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, served as a shaded rest stop with self-powered evening lights.

Borrowing inspiration from the local landmark Sloss Furnace, Solar Street Furniture uses weathering steel columns that sprout above the canopy similar to the iconic Sloss towers. The combination of organically dispersed columns of various sizes, along with the discrete column to beam attachment detail creates a floating effect— resembling the natural shade effect of trees. Below, the solar panels are transparent, allowing dappled light to filter through and offering a glimpse into the inner workings of the photovoltaic system. Laser-cut steel panels are mixed into the PV array, borrowing pattern motifs from its sister project, BJCC's CityWalk Park.
