Saint Frank Mira

San Francisco CA | Completed

2024

The project transforms a challenging, angular space into an inviting and cohesive cafe using a palette of warm, natural materials. By emphasizing materials that age beautifully and prioritizing connections between the guests and the baristas, the design creates a hospitable, universally accessible environment the brings coffee craft to everyone.

Saint Frank Mira marks a significant milestone in a decade-long partnership between David Baker Architects and San Francisco-based specialty coffee pioneer Saint Frank Coffee. Located within an idiosyncratic, angular ground-floor space of the Studio Gang-designed Mira apartment building, the project’s primary objective was to create a warm and inviting neighborhood hub that supports Saint Frank Coffee’s emphasis on service and hospitality.

The design addresses the buildings’ sharp geometry through the use of sinuous, flowing curves. By replacing rigid angles with soft architectural forms, the space becomes intuitive to navigate and feels naturally cohesive. At the heart of the cafe is a low-profile service bar crated from natural stone and ceramic tile. This intentional design choice removes physical barriers between the barista and the guests, foreground human interaction and craft of coffee-making. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in copious daylight, making the small shop seem larger and providing a direct visual connection to the street life outside.

Materiality plays a key role in the creating a sense of permanence and warmth. The palette feature simple materials -- brass, stone, and white oak -- that are chosen for their ability to age elegantly over time. A custom communal table and integrated local art further anchor the space, encouraging social connection and providing a sens of shared community. The result is a highly functional and hospitable environment that balances a minimal aesthetic with a deep commitment to accessibility. By prioritizing clarity and connection, Saint Frank Mira is a vibrant urban anchor.

The Saint Frank team has a strong focus on foregrounding the farmer. They visit these farms often, and know each farmer and their families. The company is committed to fair wages and practices throughout the supply chain. This is intrinsic to their approach to getting the best coffee available.

One of the primary values that the design team connected with was the Saint Frank team’s intentionality about their relationship with the customer. The Saint Frank leadership and team members are passionate about ensuring that all customers feel welcome, regardless of where they along their “coffee journey.” They’ll happily educate guests about the intricacies of the Saint Frank approach. Or not. If someone just wants to enjoy a good cup in a nice atmosphere, it’s a space for that too.
