Harmon Guest House Interiors

Healdsburg CA | Completed

2018

The interior design of Harmon Guest House brings custom touches and local art to this boutique hotel.

An expansion to the family, the Harmon Guest House joins h2hotel and Hotel Healdsburg to complete a trio of boutique eco-hotels adjacent to the square in Healdsburg. The vision for this new GuestHouse is inspired by three drivers: Locality, sustainability, and authenticity.

At ground level, a welcoming transparent entry lobby and open-air green stair set a tone of openness. Materials are selected for their natural beauty and durability, added nothing extraneous where not needed. The concrete structural slab is ground and polished for a striking finished lobby floor, set off by textured concrete walls and softened by reclaimed redwood sun-shading and vine trellises at the street windows. Redwood ceilings warm the common spaces and outdoor roof deck.

A series of creative collaborations with local artisans and suppliers makes for a truly unique interior personality, grounded in wine country and looking toward the area’s rich creative community. West Oakland’s Pacassa Studios, which fashioned the quirky "receptobar" and Spoonbar lighting fixtures at the h2hotel, is creating a monumental entry door and a custom reception desk for the lobby space, as well as the upstairs bar. DBA_Workshop, David Baker Architect’s in-house fabrication shop, designed and prototyped the guest room furniture in a mix of hickory and Valchromat—a strong, recycled pressed-board material infused with colorful organic dyes. David Baker Architects also engaged with California artists Eric Trine for a custom table design for the rooms.

Other furniture selections—modern design classics with clean lines—set off the organic artisan work and materials. DBA worked with Fireclay tile to create a custom blend of tiles, made in their central California factory in a repurposed apple-orchard manufactory, for the rooms and common areas. Locally made Sonoma Cast Stone concrete sinks and Peace Industry modern natural felt rugs round out the local details.

Original artworks by a range of California artists will be prominently featured throughout the hotel.
