EinwillerKuehl Office

Oakland CA | Completed

2024

This new office space commissioned by an interdisciplinary design firm transforms a disused garage into an active creative studio.

To leave the neighborhood character undisturbed, the design maintains the historic street facade and focuses the intervention within the property line. The original structure is preserved and provides the organizing system for the open office and working space layout.

At the front, two volumes—one a private conference room and the other a gallery—flank the original windows. The existing garage door was preserved and serves as the main entry, opening into a new interior courtyard, which was created by removing one bay of the roof between the structural bow trusses.

Beyond the courtyard, a broad, bright work zone features preserved and added skylights, which allow natural light to flow into the space.
