8th & Howard/SOMA Studios

San Francisco CA | Completed

2003

The city corner comes alive with 8th & Howard/SOMA Studios’ undulating edge, bright geometric mural, bustling corner market, and hand-crafted glass-and-steel gate.

On a shared site in San Francisco’s SOMA District, these two developments offer affordable family homes on one side and studio units for low-income and unhoused individuals on the other.

The building is visually rich, characterized by a modern patchwork mural punctuated with long windows on one side and a curving wall creating dramatic volumes on the other. The careful, yet playful, design allows for a depth of detail uncommon in affordable housing.

Limiting parking for this central, transit-rich site preserves space for an on-site child-care center and 19,000 sf of neighborhood-serving retail, including a prominent corner organic grocery.

Originally developed by Citizens Housing Corporation, this community is now owned and operated by Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation.
