At the AIA Conference on Architecture and Design in June 2025, Blue Oak Landing was announced as a winner of the national AIA Housing Award. The AIA and the Housing and Community Design Knowledge Community recognized eight projects this year. We are particularly honored that the jury has honored this project – a permanent supportive housing development.
About the Award
The AIA Housing Awards emphasize the importance of good housing as “a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit, and a valuable national resource.” All projects must demonstrate design excellence as defined in the AIA Framework for Design Excellence. The jury evaluates projects with the following considerations: Equity: How does the project support social impact goals and contribute to community context and history? Resilience: To what extent does the project plan for climate and community change? How do environmental performance measures contribute to long-term sustainability? Innovation + Delight: To what extent does the project model leadership in the field and enhance our understanding of residential architecture and/or community development?
About Blue Oak Landing
Located near downtown Vallejo, Blue Oak Landing provides 75 supportive apartments topping a community- and service-oriented ground floor, elevated by open-air circulation and a broad creekside courtyard. The distinctive sawtooth facade is set off by articulated, perforated weathering-steel panels.
To speed provision of much-needed housing, this modular project was built with modules fabricated by a local factory on Mare Island, just three miles from the site. On track for zero energy, the resilient design includes measures to mitigate water and energy use, including centralized heat pump water heating.
