North Side Community Center + Mabuhay Court

A public/private partnership between nonprofit housing developer Bridge Housing Corporation and the city of San Jose resulted in a new 16,000-square-foot (1,500-sq-m) community center, plus 96 new housing units for low income seniors on an adjacent site. Located in the historic Japan Town neighborhood, the project is near shops and public transit. The housing portion extends into the air rights above the community center, a design move that allowed construction of a three-story rather than blending the facility into the neighborhood. Seniors can easily take advantage of the classes, meal programs, and other services provided at the center. Walk-up stoops, patios, and individual front gardens make the units a strong part of the urban fabric. The housing opened in 2002 and the community center a year later.
