Urban Studio Lead

DBA’s Urban Design Studio provides a unique opportunity to work at both the urban and architectural scale. The Urban Studio Lead is a strategic leader, with ownership for the development and growth of DBA_Urban. This includes leading projects through all stages, developing new and existing clients, preparing and presenting proposals for projects, and mentoring junior team members. The incumbent will have a background in both architecture and urban design, be well-versed in housing rules of thumb, and be comfortable leading projects as the primary client point of contact. This role will develop strategies for our urban scale work, and work may extend to the architectural scale that arises from our urban design and planning work: DBA doesn’t just plan neighborhoods, we often design the buildings within them.

Responsibilities

  • Act as project manager and main point of contact for all urban design projects, managing projects from inception through conclusion
  • Lead complex negotiations with clients, contractors and community groups, and deliver proposal presentations at formal design reviews
  • Conduct site and neighborhood analysis, test fits, and vision planning
  • Facilitate project kickoff, and manage timelines throughout all phases of the project
  • Plan and lead community meetings
  • Sketch initial site plan with Principal input for all projects
  • Coordinate with urban designer throughout the production process
  • Evaluate all prospective urban design projects for feasibility
  • Conduct zoning analysis and execute land use and urban design evaluation to identify development project opportunities
  • Ensure adherence to relevant local, regional, state, and/or federal regulations, as well as DBA design requirements
  • Prepare planning studies and varied technical information
  • Prepare design guidelines for open space, building form, project review and site planning.
  • Prepare site layouts as well as land subdivision plans for industrial, residential, tourist, and mixed use developments.
  • Perform site plus context evaluation and identify opportunities along with constraints to maximize good urban design potential.
  • Mentor and coach team members on urban planning concepts, standards, and design
  • Share and speak on behalf of DBA and/or clients at public meetings or conferences
  • Develop and present plans to partners, decision makers, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Drive business development opportunities

Qualifications

Minimum

  • 8 years of professional experience in Architecture and/or Urban Design
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Urban Design, or Architecture
  • Deep knowledge of and experience in urban design planning, including a track record of shaping, directing and delivering large scale projects
  • Experience leading a multi-faceted team, including mentoring and coaching junior team members as needed
  • Multifamily Housing experience, especially with affordable housing communities
  • Skilled in business development
  • Strong design skills and graphic sensibility
  • Effectiveness in visual communication, including both internal and external communication
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills, and comfortable with representing the public face of DBA_Urban
  • Ability to work autonomously and drive projects to completion
  • Revit Experience
  • Zoning analysis experience
  • Actively involved in ULI, AIA and APA, and maintains current knowledge of trends, laws, and regulations in the industry

Preferred

  • Masters degree in Urban Design
  • Project tracking and fee proposal experience
  • Hand-sketching skills
  • Previous work in Bay Area jurisdictions
  • Strong Adobe Suite skills
  • LEED AP or GA
  • Business development experience in a relevant industry/area

Interior Architect/Designer (1-5 years' experience)

We are seeking a full-time, creative and collaborative Interior Architect or Designer with an interest in housing, hospitality, and social justice.

This position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and is currently hybrid in-person/remote. 

This position—for an interior architect or a designer—works closely with DBA_Inside, our Interiors studio, to manage projects from acquisition through design and execution. We’re looking for a capable, collaborative person who can work with our in-house team across many projects. This position will support DBA's interior design studio through material research, preparing presentations, and documenting interior design concepts from conception thorugh construction.

DBA_Inside, our interiors studio, is integrated throughout the larger DBA practice, collaborating on large-scale projects (multifamily housing, hotels) as well as running stand-alone commercial interior architecture projects that balance high-end design with community benefit.

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • 1-5 years of professional experience at an architecture or interior design firm
  • Strong design skills
  • Strong hand-sketching skills
  • Experience with interior architecture and FF&E selection/specification
  • Strong Adobe Suite skills and rendering skills
  • Experience with Revit
  • Interest and/or experience in public interest design
  • Experience with multifamily and/or hospitality experience is a plus

Studio Manager, Oakland Office

David Baker Architects (DBA) is looking for an ambitious, organized and detail-oriented individual to join our growing Oakland team. DBA is a socially oriented architecture and urban planning firm, nationally recognized for creating thoughtful housing, commercial spaces, and urban environments that allow communities to thrive. The studio manager position manages day-to-day studio operations, supports our Oakland-based principal, Brett Randall Jones, as well as the other Bay Area Principals, and contributes to firm culture and administrative initiatives led by our San Francisco-based team. If you have 2-3 years of office experience, a gift for organizing things and people, and a can-do spirit, then this could be the role for you.

Our offices are extremely collaborative - project teams may include individuals from any office. At the moment, the majority of our employees are still working remotely. We are transitioning into a hybrid in-person / remote work model, as public health guidelines allow, however, this position requires an in-person presence in our Oakland, CA office. Salary is commensurate with experience.
