Architectural Designer (0-5 years' experience)  

We are seeking a passionate, collaborative designer with an interest in multifamily housing, sustainability, and public interest design.

We are looking for candidates with: 

  • 0-5 years professional experience at an architecture or interior design firm
  • Architecture background (education or experience working closely within an architectural team or as an architectural designer)
  • Proficiency in Revit
  • Architectural rendering experience
  • Strong design skills and graphic sensibility
  • Interest and/or experience in public interest design
  • Effectiveness in visual communication including hand-sketching
  • Strong Adobe Suite skills

This is a full-time position based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently the majority of staff are following a hybrid model of part time in-office/part-time remote work. DBA has had success with this hybrid model and plans to support a flexible approach to work indefinitely. The ability to join teams at the office or on site periodically is strongly preferred.

Architect or Architectural Designer (5-10 years' experience)

We are seeking a talented and engaged licensed architect or architectural designer to join us in the San Francisco Bay Area or Birmingham, Alabama. Experience in multifamily housing and sustainable design is a plus. This position offers a great opportunity to design and manage project from concept through completion and to work with highly engaged colleagues committed to being a "multiplier of good"—doing work that creates a ripple outward of positive effects.

We are looking candidates with:

  • 5-10 years professional architectural experience
  • Proven track record of fully managing at least one project, ideally from start to completion, including managing staff, consultant teams, and client relationships
  • A strong technical command of how buidlings come together and sucessfull experience with the building permitting process
  • Experience or interest in with multifamily housing design, public interest design, and/or sustainable design.
  • Strong design and graphic skills, including hand-sketching
  • Working knowledge of Revit

This is a full-time position. We are interested in candidates for either our San Francisco Bay Area offices or our Birmingham, Alabama, office. Responsibilities:

Construction Projects

  • Participate in Owner/Architect/Contractor weekly meetings
  • Perform site visits and produce field observation reports
  • Manage communication and revisions as part of the CA process
  • Negotiate code interpretations with authorities having jurisdiction, as needed
  • Advocate throughout for great design/preservation of building design intent

Staff Support

  • Serve as technical resource for project teams
  • Perform technical review of drawing sets
  • Provide consistent clear feedback to staff to continually improve QA/QC for the firm

Site visits to projects will average once a week (days of the week and number of projects will vary).This is a full-time position based in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the moment, the majority of our employees are working part time in-person and part-time remotely. The ability to join teams at the office or on site periodically is strongly preferred. We plan to support a hybrid in-person/remote model indefinitely.

Design and Research Intern 2022

 

We are seeing a candidate for a paid, full-time, 8- to 12-week internship to be completed in a hybrid fashion—partially remote and partially in-person in the San Francisco or Oakland office. This position offers a great opportunity to observe and analyze themes in building features and results across our entire portfolio, and to work with a group of committed, mission-driven architects.

The start date is somewhat flexible. It can start as soon as May 16th, but no later than June 13th.

The Design and Research Intern will gather, analyze, and represent data about past projects to help inform decisions about materials, systems, schedules, and fees for our buildings. They will help us advise clients and reflect on our history of bringing new housing to some of the most constrained housing markets in the country.

Tasks will include collecting and formatting data from multiple sources and entering it into Airtable, a data visualization tool. This data will then be analyzed, and graphic summaries will be prepared, so that other employees can easily find information.

The position includes opportunities to visit construction sites, attend internal design meetings, and learn more about the field of architecture and housing development. A strong candidate will be interested in data analysis or trends in housing development. A background in architecture is not required. Minimum

  • Third or fourth-year student pursuing a Bachelor degree in any discipline

Marketing Coordinator

DBA is seeking a Marketing Coordinator to join our in-house Communications team. This position works closely with the Communications Director, PR consultant, and firm leadership across a range of communications-related areas and takes the lead on social media and website content management.

Responsibilities

Social Media Management

  • Own and build out DBA’s social media content publishing calendar
  • Curate social media campaigns to convey DBA mission, message, and work
  • Create all social content (text, image, and video), including editing, approval, and scheduling of posts for all platforms
  • Create timely weekly materials formatted for staff to share with contacts

Website Management & Content Creation

  • Website migration QA/QC (special project)
  • Website: Manage, update, and maintain dynamic website content (via CMS)
  • Blog: Help develop and maintain in-house blog calendar and blog creation  
  • Newsletter: Produce monthly digital newsletter

Marketing Materials & Management

  • Participate in development of proposals and awards submissions

Media Projects

Urban Studio Lead

DBA’s Urban Design Studio provides a unique opportunity to work at both the urban and architectural scale. The Urban Studio Lead is a strategic leader, with ownership for the development and growth of DBA_Urban. This includes leading projects through all stages, developing new and existing clients, preparing and presenting proposals for projects, and mentoring junior team members. The incumbent will have a background in both architecture and urban design, be well-versed in housing rules of thumb, and be comfortable leading projects as the primary client point of contact. This role will develop strategies for our urban scale work, and work may extend to the architectural scale that arises from our urban design and planning work: DBA doesn’t just plan neighborhoods, we often design the buildings within them.

Responsibilities

  • Act as project manager and main point of contact for all urban design projects, managing projects from inception through conclusion
  • Lead complex negotiations with clients, contractors and community groups, and deliver proposal presentations at formal design reviews
  • Conduct site and neighborhood analysis, test fits, and vision planning
  • Facilitate project kickoff, and manage timelines throughout all phases of the project
  • Plan and lead community meetings
  • Sketch initial site plan with Principal input for all projects
  • Coordinate with urban designer throughout the production process
  • Evaluate all prospective urban design projects for feasibility
  • Conduct zoning analysis and execute land use and urban design evaluation to identify development project opportunities
  • Ensure adherence to relevant local, regional, state, and/or federal regulations, as well as DBA design requirements
  • Prepare planning studies and varied technical information
  • Prepare design guidelines for open space, building form, project review and site planning.
  • Prepare site layouts as well as land subdivision plans for industrial, residential, tourist, and mixed use developments.
  • Perform site plus context evaluation and identify opportunities along with constraints to maximize good urban design potential.
  • Mentor and coach team members on urban planning concepts, standards, and design
  • Share and speak on behalf of DBA and/or clients at public meetings or conferences
  • Develop and present plans to partners, decision makers, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Drive business development opportunities

Qualifications

Minimum

  • 8 years of professional experience in Architecture and/or Urban Design
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Urban Design, or Architecture
  • Deep knowledge of and experience in urban design planning, including a track record of shaping, directing and delivering large scale projects
  • Experience leading a multi-faceted team, including mentoring and coaching junior team members as needed
  • Multifamily Housing experience, especially with affordable housing communities
  • Skilled in business development
  • Strong design skills and graphic sensibility
  • Effectiveness in visual communication, including both internal and external communication
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills, and comfortable with representing the public face of DBA_Urban
  • Ability to work autonomously and drive projects to completion
  • Revit Experience

  • Actively involved in ULI, AIA and APA, and maintains current knowledge of trends, laws, and regulations in the industry
