Workshop Fabricator/Designer

DBA_WORKSHOP is an in-house design and fabrication studio within David Baker Architects (DBA). This full-service wood and metal shop collaborates closely with DBA’s architects and designers to create unique elements for architectural projects and supports teams with the capacity to prototype and fabricate custom furniture and casework. The shop staff works with a variety of materials—wood, metal, concrete, and more—and are always learning new processes, tools, and techniques. DBA Workshop is housed at DBA_OAK, the firm’s Oakland location.

 

We seek a candidate for a full-time fabricator/designer to assist with a wide range of projects, including the fabrication of large architectural ceiling elements, rapid prototyping, and the design and fabrication of custom furniture for the buildings we design.

 

The workshop runs with two full-time fabricators and a firm Principal, who serves as a liaison to the larger architectural practice. This team occasionally coordinates with outside makers and shops. We are looking for a motivated and talented individual to bring their expertise, expand their skill set, and integrate as a vital part of our collaborative team.

  • Entry to mid-level professional fabrication experience  
  • Bachelor degree in architecture, industrial design, or related design field
  • Strong design skills and material sensibility

Responsibilities:

Design and Project Management

  • Work on a collaborative team to design and prototype custom furniture and casework
  • Investigate and prototype new architectural material systems
  • Manage project communication, pricing, and schedule
  • Participate in Owner/Architect/Contractor meetings as required
  • Perform site visits and document site conditions for installation
  • Advocate throughout for great design

Fabrication

  • Fabricate custom furniture, casework, and built-in features for architectural projects
  • Serve as technical resource for project teams
  • Perform technical review of drawing sets
  • Provide consistent and clear feedback to staff to continually improve QA/QC for the firm
  • Fabrication processes range from woodworking and metalwork, to concrete work and general construction, but are not limited to these areas.

Workshop Management

  • Manage and maintain the workshop, tools, and materials
  • Develop new processes and personal skills to further workshop goals
  • Research, source, and acquire materials

Design and Research Intern

 

We seek a candidate for a paid, full-time, 8 to 12 week-duration internship to be completed remotely or, if the office has re-opened during the internship period, the candidate may be offered the option of working in-person in the San Francisco office. The start date is flexible. It can start as soon as May 3rd, but no later than June 15th. Salary commensurate with experience.

 

The Design and Research Intern will gather, analyze, and represent data about past projects to help inform decisions about materials, systems, schedules, and fees for our buildings. It will help us advise clients and reflect on our history of bringing new housing to some of the most constrained housing markets in the country. 

 

Tasks will include collecting and formatting data from multiple sources and entering it into Airtable, a data visualization tool. This data will then be analyzed, and graphic summaries will be prepared, so that other employees can easily find information. 

 

The position includes opportunities to visit construction sites, attend internal design meetings, and learn more about the field of architecture and housing development. A strong candidate will be interested in data analysis or trends in housing development. A background in architecture is not required.

  • Demonstrated interest, coursework or experience in architecture, urbanism, community building, housing affordability, sustainability, or data science
  • Proficiency in Google Sheets
  • Strong communication skills
  • Someone who is highly resourceful, reliable, and detail-oriented
  • Strong professional references

Preferred

  • Experience collecting and organizing large amounts of information
  • Ability to write and edit complex spreadsheet formulas
  • Familiarity with Airtable
  • Strong visual design skills
