Onizuka Crossing

Sunnyvale CA | Completed

2016

In partnership, two affordable housing developers—MidPen Housing and Charities Housing—coordinated to transform the site of a former armory into permanent, supportive housing for unhoused and low-income families and Veterans in the heart of Sunnyvale.

The project is located near the junction of two major thoroughfares and a large public park, and the design and development teams coordinated closely to maximize the benefits of the site for both developments and the surrounding neighborhood.

The 58 homes are arranged in “pods” around a system of open-air corridors that run through the project like a spine, originating from a prominent open-air stair at the entry. Sunny community and service spaces occupy the street level. The careful integration of building and planted open space is a central feature of the design strategy, and introducing a higher density development into the existing neighborhood required stepping the building massing down to meet the surrounding residential scale.
